Number codes for metal (such as 6061 and 6063)

Hi Sir/ Madam, How are you doing? I hope you are doing fine. I have just got my first job in my life, and the company deals with metal trading. I need the job for my living. Although I am not good at the field of metal, I start reading the books in the recent. Now, I still have the problems. For example, what's the difference between aluminum 6061 and 6063? What's that number for? How can I get the information of those numbers from ferrous metals? Is there an official website for the standard of those metals and numbers? I would really appreciate if you can offer a hand to me. Thanks a lot! Also, I am sorry to my poor English. Take care and keep in touch!

Yours sincerely,

Victor,

I'd suggest you visit Matweb at www.matweb.com. They have an extensive list which includes compositions. Another good site for introductory info on North American designations would be www.efunda.com. Of course, you've found the best site n finishing...

The two numbers you are mentioned are aluminum extrusion alloys. To get more information get a copy of the Aluminum Association handbook. 6063 is normally used for none structural aluminum extrusions such as window. 6061 is a stronger alloy used for more structural applications, such as truck trailer components.
