Adverse effects of zinc plating on CRS
2003
Hello,
I would like to know if zinc plating could adversely affect the performance or life of ASTM 1144, A108 CRS shafting. I'm concerned about the temperature, heating and cooling rates.
Thank you kindly.

Well, zinc is obviously a different material than steel, so the performance will be different in some ways. The melting point of zinc is lower than steel, so you may have to be concerned about temperature. While zinc plating retards corrosion in most atmospheres, it is of no value in an acidic environment such as in a plating shop. So your questions are hard to answer without full context.
I think the biggest issue is that most shafting is polished and tight tolerance. You would not be able to slide a gear or sprocket or coupling along a zinc plated shaft.
