16 Surface Finish - SS 304

2003

Hi,
My questions has to do with how to achieve a 16 Micronesia surface finish on two parts that are made of SS 304.
The first part is a flat cylindrical plate, that we want to get this 16 finish on the flat face.
The second part is a cylindrical pipe shaped part, and we want to get a 16 surface finish or better on the ID. The cylindrical pipe is 17.5" in diameter, and the cylindrical plate is 17.5" in diameter.

Thanks to all who reply.
Cheers, Tom

This part is not a good candidate for mass finishing equipment because ID surfaces do not get worked as well a OD surfaces. It can be done; however, I am leaning toward a wheel type system. Then again, if you have a lot of volume, you might want to look into an extrude hone type system. If you go with a wheel system, you should consider non-woven type wheels and maybe some automation because repeatability of surface coverage and pressure is important.
