Chromate conversion coating

What does chromate conversion coating mean.
How is the typical thickness and hardness (compared to Al) of such coating.

Turki, Jamel
-Baden-Würtemberg, Germany
2003

Chromate is covered under MIL-C-5541 f. It is a soft gel coating about 0.000 040 inch thick. Left bare the coating degrades at temp above 140 °F. Under paint put it on thinner like 0.000 015 inch and paint over, then you may exceed 140 °F to cure the paint.
