Acceptable Substitute/Replacement for Alodine 1200 Chromate Conversion Coating

Q. Alodine 1200 or equivalent treatment is used for corrosion protection treatment for aluminum alloys. I would like to know whether 1101 LN 9368 teil 3 is a similar or equivalent process.

A. Hi Suju. Alodine is a Henkel trade name, not a generic process. Your situation depends on the spec that you work to. For example, if you are working to MIL-DTL-5541 [on DLA] and the product you want to use is on the latest revision of the qualified products list MIL-DTL-81706 [on DLA] , then it is an equivalent process according for that specification. And if it's not on the list, then it's not equivalent.

Q. LN9368 Number 1101 is equivalent to MIL-C-5541 or not? Please suggest.

A. Hi Kalyan. It got a little more complicated in the 12 years since the last posting on this thread because MIL-DTL-81706 [on DLA] is now an electronic database, and you need to search by Type, Class, Form, and Method to determine if a particular product is qualified. So follow the link to the database, pick your specified type and class, and see if the product you wish to use is listed there. If it's not, then that product is not acceptable under the MIL-C-5541 process.

LN-9368 is a DIN standard of, it seems, 7 parts ("LN 9368-1" through "LN 9368-7"), and I don't have a copy, so I don't know what you mean by "Number 1101". Still, LN9368 is a different specification than MIL-C-5541 so the concept of equivalency is somewhere between meaningless and indeterminate. It's rather like asking whether the Constitution of the United States is "equivalent" to the Constitution of India. Yes, they fill the same general role in that they guide a country, if you want to look at it that way; and MIL-C-5541 and LN 9368 fill the same general role in guiding a chemical treatment. Good luck.
