Stainless Steel for Screw Machine Use
We make fasteners usually in brass and was wondering what was the best stainless steel with good machinability for screw machines and one with good corrosion resistance to salt water atmospheres. Is 303 better than 316 or 304?
Thanks,

Type 303 stainless steel was developed as a free-machining grade, and as such, has improved machinability compared to Types 304 or 316. However, its corrosion resistance in environments containing chloride ions is much worse than that of Types 304 or 316. Can you describe in more detail the application and the environment? Carpenter is the leading manufacturer of stainless steel bar and wire in the US, and has a number of grades suitable for machining. The Project 70+® upgrades of the standard 304 & 316 alloys have enhanced machinability without sacrificing corrosion resistance.
