Minimizing scratches on solid brass

In the process of installing a solid brass kickplate, I scratched it. Is there some way to remove the scratches or at least minimize their appearance?

George, most kick plates are coated with a clear lacquer to keep them looking new. You might be able to sand the scratch with fine wet sandpaper and spray another coat of clear over the plate if the scratch is not deep. If it is into the brass, you will probably have to strip the finish (automotive stores have stripper and finish in spray cans) and polish the scratch out. Then respray the finish coat.

Good luck.
