Plating onto SS416

Hi, I am using SS416 material for making special fasteners. I apply Xylan on this fastener to minimize friction (this cannot be avoided). This Xylan is not corrosion resistant. I am facing a problem in this application. Fasteners are rusting in just 5 hours of salt spray (requirement is min 48 hours)

Can you please suggest me a suitable plating (no Zinc) on SS416.

Can EN be plated on SS416?

400 series SS is quite easy to plate with EN if proper preplate steps are used. From your description, you could probably get by with 0.0005" of mid phos EN. Slightly more would add insurance.

Dear Mr James Watts,

For plating EN onto 416 SS, what pretreatment would you consider adequate for subsequent bonding of EN? We will be baking after EN followed by shot blasting over the EN and baking once again to cure the Xylan at above 300 °C.

Thanks in advance,
