Does shot peening change the previously machined dimensions

Q. Tolerances are within plus or minus 0.0005 inches

Does shot peening change the previously machined dimension on a part? If so, how much on 2024T42 aluminum?

A. Yes it will effect the dimension. How much depends on the metal peened, its hardness, the type of shot, the intensity (velocity) of the shot, the angle and the duration. I can not say that I have ever heard of aluminum being shot peened. It will also change the surface finish of the part.

A. Answer yes! How much depends on: 1. type (material) of shot, 2. size of shot, 3. the force or pressure, 4 the position or distance of the part in relationship to nozzle. Lastly, the type of equipment, be it vacuum, pressure, or airless wheel systems, will also have an effect on the final finish and/or dimensions.

A. Shot peening can change dimensions, depending on the media used, intensity, coverage, etc. The tolerance that you stated is quite small, so I would imagine some change. You would be best to more thoroughly discuss this with an expert from Metal Improvement. Contact them through their website.
