Keep Copper Coating from blackening

I have a boat house with a copper roof cupola on it. The copper turns black in months. I have a yard bird house with a copper roof. The copper on that bird house is still copper after 3 years. If I clean my cupola copper roof and put something like a water based lacquer on it would that prevent the mildewing or what ever it is that turns it black?

Incralac

(affil links)

Hi...I haven't tried this yet myself, but I just had a custom fence made for myself with copper caps along the fence. I too, wanted to keep it shiny. I have been told to clean it with Brasso this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] , then wipe it with a lacquer thinner this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] Warning! highly flammable! to remove all dirt etc, then apply a product called Incralac this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] -- it is manufactured in CT and distributed in Ohio. They assured me this would work for quite some time -- Years. They also suggested after a few months to apply a car wax...This could be difficult for you! I am waiting for my shipment to come and look forward to trying it. Good Luck
