Steel grade EN8D
Q. Which organisation has decided the grades of material, e.g.,EN8D grade steel? Is there equivalent grade of this material.
Vijay Shirsat- Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
2003
A. EN8D is a carbon steel, detailed in British Standard BS970, I have an old copy of the standard, and the composition is as follows:
C 0.40 to 0.45%, Si 0.05 to 0.35%, Mn 0.70 to 0.9%, S <= 0.06%, P <= 0.06%.

Q. Is EN8D MATERIAL equivalent to CK 45?
Sarveshwar Singh- PUNE, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA
2007
A. Hi Sarveshwar. They seem quite close in chemical composition and, according to keiusa.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Cross-Reference-of-Steel-Standards.pdf, all of the following are equivalent:
BS 080A40 - DIN CK45 - IS 45C8 - EN EN8D - SAE 1040,1045
... but I don't think we can say that one standard is "absolutely" equivalent to another standard except in terms of meeting a specific and detailed list of requirements. Good luck.
