Needing to darken pewter

I am in need of information on how to age pewter. This pewter has been formed as legs like a spider on a chandelier with lights at the end. The owners are wanting the pewter to be turned dark or black and I do not know how to do this or what to use. Please Help!

Nancy,

Sorry, but I don't have the foggiest idea as how one should age darken your pewter. Nor did you say if your pewter candelabra was modern or old.

Modern pewter is, as far as I know, pretty 'bright' and silvery. Old pewter is dark ... I have a collection of pewter mugs, mostly modern, starting in 1922 ... but one is 1790-1810 and pretty dark.

As the modern pewter contains much less (poisonous) lead and more tin (I believe), maybe it may not lend itself to darkening. Why don't you try a drop or two of acid or bleach to see what will happen.

Am sorry that I can't be of any further help.
