Difference between Alodine 1200 and 1201 or are they the same
Q. Could someone please tell me the difference between Alodine 1200 and Alodine 1201 ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] . I know Alodine 1200 is a powder and has to be mixed, and Alodine 1201 ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] is a liquid form. But will there be a difference in the finish and what is the mil spec, class type and method. If I could get some help in this matter I would appreciate it.
Thank you,

A. The best source of information is the manufacturer.

A. Alodine 1200 is intended as an immersion treatment. Controlled in a bath at elevated temperatures. Alodine 1201 is a brush application treatment. I think, but someone may need to correct me, that they are both MIL-C-5541 qualified.

A. First, get the manufacturer's (Henkel) product bulletins, as recommended by James Watt. Then, to learn about Class (1A or 3), product forms, and application methods of all approved chromate conversion products for MIL-C-5541, download MIL-DTL-81706
[on DLA]
and QPL-81706

Alochrom 1200 vs. Alodine 1201
Q. When ordering Alodine 1201 ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] for surface treating aluminium aircraft components, my organisation was supplied Alocrom 1200 with a claim that they are the same thing. I am not sure that this is so.

Can I use Alodine 1201 instead of 1200
Q. The manual I am using is calling for use of Alodine 1200 or equivalent. I have a lot of Alodine 1201 ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] . Could I use the 1201?

A. Possibly. Per QPL-81706, Alodine 1200 (& 1200S) can be used for Class 1A coatings via Methods A (Spray), B (Brush) and C (Immersion), and for Class 3 coatings via Immersion.
Alodine 1201 is only approved for Class 1A coatings applied by Brush.
So, process procedures may preclude the use of Alodine 1201. Re-qualification per MIL-C-5541 C (salt spray testing, adhesion if painting) would be necessary. Solution maintenance could be a problem.

Q. I have used Alodine 1200 and Alodine 1201 ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] to re-treat Aircraft wheel assemblies after reworking for corrosion. I have dipped and sprayed these products on wheel assemblies. Sometimes I get a gold color. What is the problem when it comes out blueish/grey. I have removed the corrosion from the mating surfaces of the wheel halves glass media. I have also tried an acid etch to clean the aluminum after using the glass media. Soaking time for either Alodine is 5 minutes to 10 minutes but I have been getting this bluish/gray color. Is this color still protecting the aluminum? Please advise.

A. The thing that strikes me is that you are putting on the Alodine for 5-10 minutes.
That seems a little long as a ball park we aim for 2-5 minutes.
With conversion coatings sometimes less time gives a better coat.
Try a shorter dip time.
