Standard for 17-4PH S/S finish: MIL-10

Hi,

Our instruments need to look all the same, so we took a specified spec from our subcontractor who did a prototype for us and specified it on all our drawings. The finish specified by the other company was used on a S/S 17-4PH or 630S/S surgical instrument. I have not found any of the MIL standard.

My question is: does anybody has a standard equivalent for "glass shot MIL-10 at 30 psi?".

Another quick one: where can I find those specs?

Another quick one: Is there any kind of S/S I can't use this spec on?

Thanks,

Hello Marc!

According to the Acquisition Streamlining and Standardization Information System, Mil-Std-10A was cancelled some time ago, and replaced by ASME B46.1 (actually an ASME document, and a rather fine one on "Surface Roughness, Waviness, and Lay"). It gives definitions for terminology, and how to measure surface roughness, but is not appropriate to use as a finish specification.

I'm not sure what would be a proper callout, though. Something along the lines of what you'd noted, "glass bead peen at 30 psi to achieve uniform frosty surface texture" might suffice.

Good luck!
