Galvannealed finish doesn't look like we expected?
I need clarification: We specified pre-coated galvannealed sheet metal to be used in our printer. The finish was not what we expected. I want a nice consistent light gray buff finish like the ones you see in laser printers and other devices like VCR's. Instead we got a dull dark gray modeled look. Maybe I am not asking for the right thing? Please help. Could the precoated material I am looking for not be galvannealed? Maybe aluminized?

We want to use precoated steel for the inside of our printers. We specified galvannealed sheet from our fabrication facility. We expected to see the light gray material you see inside laser printers and computer chassis. What we got was this nasty dark gray material. We also got two different types from two different houses. How do I get what I want? How do I specify this to maintain QA?

Why are you specifying galvanneal? Are you welding the piece? It sounds like the piece is not exposed. I would think that the finished appearance of the galvanneal is directly related to the type of steel being specified. If appearance is critical and you are not welding or painting maybe you could specify a no spangle galvanized rather than galvanneal.

I think the most responsible for the loss of the brightness is the content of the silicon in the substrate , which means the reaction goes on to melt the zinc in the surface layer , to over come this aluminum which gives the extra brightness.
