Blueing for the novice?

I'd like to order some rust blue for my 1889 rem hammer I'm restoring can it be applied by hand without boiling and use of a humidifier box, as I have no special bluing tools.

Acceptable cold blue solutions are available from Brownells [ Brownells home page (affil link) ] gunsmith supply. Oxpho Blue is easy to use and can match most finishes already on gun parts. While not for whole gun restoration, it will work well on small parts and to repair worn and scratched areas.
