Leveler and Brightener in zinc electroplating

Q. I am getting rough and very dull surface in acidic zinc (ZnSO4) electroplating. I am using current density of 200 A/square meter. What are the levelers and brightener I can use and what should be the concentration. Please note I am doing electroplating in lab not at large scale.

A. Generic zinc sulphate is not normally used as a plating bath except for wire plating where brightness is not important. The smaller the scale of plating, the more important it is to use proprietary plating baths that are already fully developed. You probably need a proprietary ammonium chloride or sodium chloride zinc plating bath, although I believe there are proprietary zinc sulphate baths available as well.
