Grinding Inconel and Need Help with Problems

Q. I just started working for my company and ran into a problem with grinding a root form on a turbine engine blade. The material is Inconel and we are grinding this form on an Ex-Cello 600 using Oil as our coolant. The problem we are having is eliminating surface white layer (over heating). Does anyone have an idea as to how to eliminate this problem?

A. Inconel has a very high % of nickel. Nickel really should not be ground. If you are going to do it anyway, take a thinner cut (possibly a lot thinner cut), check your speeds, check your feeds. Switch to a wheel that breaks down faster. You are plugging the wheel which is causing a burnishing as well as a cut, thus the "white" layer. Norton is probably as good a reference as any to the proper grit size and correct "binder". I would surely rather talk to their Tech service than a sales rep.

A. We have had a very positive experience grinding Inconel with a vitrified CBN wheel with induced porosity. The wheel is so porous that you can actually see the pores with a naked eye. These pores allow the wheel to grind much, much cooler than other wheels. The problem might be with grinding the profile into the CBN wheel, but if you have a good diamond rotary dresser, it will not be a problem.

A. Do you work at Turbomachinery? I would suggest you talk to Steve Bunkowske. I believe he still works for your company.

Q. We are working for aerospace company.
Can you suggest what is the best dressable grinding wheel for machining INCO-718 on cylindrical grinding machine? We have a single point diamond dresser -- 6 carat.

Please suggest ...
