Stainless steel corrosion

Q. Could you please give me the different characteristics of resistance to corrosion between stainless steels 304L and 316L? Which one is more resistant than the other?

316 stainless is considerably better than 304 for corrosion, especially in contact with salt spray, like on the ocean. There are various analogs of 316, like 316L, that are even better.

316 ss has slightly lower chromium content, but higher nickel and 2-3% Moly, other subtle differences. 316 is softer than 304, and therefore sometimes not as good structurally.

Hi Anais !

You would be far better served searching in the internet for stainless steel manufacturers in France or in Belgium because they, in their corrosion resistance data, would show comparisons between various grades of 'acier inoxydable'

In a nutshell, type 3l6 costs more, has more expensive alloys and, naturellement, is plus meilleur.

Go cherchez les manufacturers, s.v.p. Merci !
