Corrosion in salt-making
Hello,
I have a problem. I have a container where I make salt and there is a lot of corrosion. The container is made of SS316 L, and in it I have saturated Salt with a pH=6 and a temperature for about 100 C. What material do you recommend me to use instead.

I think titanium construction would be okay, but there are a number of things the container could be coated or plated with. ![]() Ted Mooney, P.E. James Watts- Navarre, Florida 2003 Peter, May I suggest that you use an appropriate plastic.... but why 100 °C? I used to design brine makers for the salt (mining) industry and used Polyethylene but Pe is nbg at over, say, 150 °F. At 90 °C, a dual laminate tank made out CPVC is OK ... PVDF is OK to 140 °CC and the other weldable fluorocarbons such as Tefzel, ECTMP (i.e., Halar) are supposed to be good to around 200 °C ... however, they cost an arm and a leg hence the fibreglassing to the thinner thermoplastic to give structural strength. ![]() Freeman Newton [deceased] (It is our sad duty to advise that Freeman passed away April 21, 2012.
