Etching amalgam




I am a postgraduate student in dental material science. I am working on silver, tin and copper amalgam alloy used for dental fillings. I require an etchant which can cause pitting in the amalgam surface so that the repair of fractured restoration can be performed. please help.

Dear Mr. Javaid,

I know from my own experience that working in an environment with ambient Sulfur Dioxide fumes causes fairly rapid deterioration of amalgam fillings. You may want to try Sulfurous Acid (H2SO3) as your corrosive chemical. I don't think you would want to use this in someones mouth.
