Inexpensive high temp coating
2003
Dear Sir,
I have built a prototype that needs a coating which is wear resistant, will handle temperatures to 6,000 degrees F and does not conduct DC up to 3,000 volts. Currently we have tried approx. 7,000 thick aluminum oxide which may need to be just thicker? As this is a prototype, we are also trying to do this as inexpensively as possible. The coating surface is approx. 2" wide by 14" in diameter. The base unit which we are coating is a cast aluminum, (inlet housing for a turbine).
Thanks,

Sounds like you need some thermal insulation in there too. How about Space Shuttle thermal tiles? It will be interesting to see what other responses show up on this one!

Engine manufactures used to use thermal or plasma sprayed Yittrium and Zirconium oxide blend in the burner area. I have zero idea if it will work as a nonconductor to 3,000 volts. There are several thermal spray companies that could provide you with technical information and local contract applicators if you do not have the equipment. Most of my work was with Metco equipment, so that could be a first step.
