Using a Copper Bowl for a Baptismal Font

Using a copper bowl for Baptism

I have just purchased a copper bowl to use in a church for a baptismal font..I want to maintain the bright copper finish inside and out of the bowl, and at the same time be able to maintain water in the bowl. It is extremely important that the finish that is used on the inside will not be dangerous to the babies who will be immersed in the bowl. What do you suggest using for this finish? Would you use the same finish on the inside and outside? Can a non-professional complete the finish?

Wax or lacquer applied to the surface should be alright on a baby's head.
