Recommend Cleaning Process for Anodized Aluminum

WHat is the best method & recommended cleaning material(s) to clean black anodized aluminum per MIL A 8625F Types II & III Class II?

Phil Stanley
- East Syracuse, New York, USA
2003

What material needs to be cleaned off of the anodize? Also, how long was it on the surface?

General cleaning rules for anodized aluminum, from the Aluminum Anodizing Council (www.anodizing.org): 1) No acids or caustics. 2) No chlorinated solvents. 3) No hard rubbing with coarse abrasives; the finer grades of Scotchbrite pads or pumice this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] powder are OK, sandpaper or steel wool are not. 4) If unsure of the method, test it in an inconspicuous region if possible. 5) One recommended technique is to use an abrasive cleaning sponge with mild dish washing liquid. 6) Mild soap is preferable to detergent for routine cleaning.
