Chemical resistance of Cadmium coated bearings (Deionized Water)
My questions is related to the chemical resistance of Cadmium coating on a stainless steel bearing application. We are currently reviewing a replacement bearing for use in a gimble bearing assembly on our polishing tool. The manufacture who supplies a direct replacement stainless steel version of the bearing we are currently using, has informed me that the bearing has a cadmium coating. My questions is what resistance does cadmium have to deionized water? The Deionized water is currently causing our existing bearing to corrode, but has little effect on Stainless Steel.

Cadmium is a sacrificial coating such that it lasts a limited time in any environment including DI water. People are getting away from cadmium plating as rapidly as they can; do not specify it unless it has a unique combination of properties for your situation. If stainless is okay, use plain stainless.
