Causing rust to develop rapidly on mild steel

2003

I have a problem that is bugging me. I have to produce some decorative iron/mild steel items that have a fairly even orange rust coating - preferably as a naturally developed oxidization process.

Other than the obvious degreasing and moist atmosphere can anyone suggest an accelerator?

My experiments have taken me 3 or 4 weeks to get a complete coating with a degree of flaking. I'm hoping to improve it to within a week!

Thanks,

Just wondering if you ever got a response to your question about advancing rust on metal. I have a project to make a new, reproduction, Viking sword look centuries old.

Thank you
