Galvanized roofing iron and copper spouting - A Good Mix?
2003
I have a concrete tile roof which needs replacing. The guttering which collects water off the roof and down pipes are all copper. I am thinking I will replace the roof with long-run galvanized roofing iron, but will this cause a problem with the copper spouting and down-pipes. The galvanized roofing will be isolated from the copper but obviously will be connected (by the water) when it rains. I would like advice on whether it is wise to mix galvanized roofing iron with copper spouting and down-pipes.
Cheers,

Hi Archie. If the two metals are not physically touching (a metal to metal conductive circuit), you cannot have galvanic corrosion. Think of a drycell battery still in its package. No current flows until you connect the two different metals (the positive and negative poles) with a piece of wire.
