Coin Rusting Information

I am looking for information on coin rusting and cannot find anything, any suggestions? I am helping my mentee with a science project.

First of two simultaneous responses --

Only iron and steel rust, and few coins would be made of steel or iron. You might use search terms like "tarnish" or "corrosion" rather than "rust"; and you should learn what the coins in question are made of and use that metal or alloy in your search instead of "coin".

Second of two simultaneous responses --

Gee Charmaine, did you try the search engine at this site or even read the numerous entries that there currently are at this site in this section on pennies? As stated repeatedly, pennies do not rust-they corrode. Only iron can rust--by definition. James Watts

Unless your pennies were all minted in 1943- these were zinc-coated steel. They're also worth from 10 cents to 70 dollars, depending on condition....
