COMPATIBILITY OF HARD CHROME AND PHOSPHOROUS BRONZE
2002
We plate shafts approx. 40 mm diameter and 20 inches long with 200 micron thick hard chrome which is reground to high finish after plating leaving approx. 100 micron thick coating. These shafts run in phosphorous bronze bushes. We are surprised to see extensive wear on hard chrome plated surface within 25-30 minutes of first use. However there was no wear inside the bushes.

Can anyone explain the reason. Whether it is improper pretreatment or is it that chrome does not have compatibility with phos. bronze. There was no peeling on plated surface but scouring. We use 100:1 bath, can deposit from HEEF bath behave any better as they claim to have microcracked pattern better than 100:1 bath.
Expert opinion will be appreciated

Phosphorous bronze is one of the alloys not recommended to be used with hard chromium. I don't know the reason but I have seen it in a text.(HARD CHROMIUM USERS MANUAL)
