Etchant for NiFe
Q. Hi,
I need either wet or dry etchant for NiFe. What can I use?
Thanks,

A. Hi Jerome. On this metal finishing site "etchant" has a lot of meanings, and some of them involve an additional metal, like how to etch away a nickel-iron coating on another metal without etching the other metal, or how to remove copper plating or some other plating without affecting a NiFe substrate. But I'm guessing that you are inquiring about doing metallographic etching of NiFe and there is not another metal you need to worry about?
According to an abstract at www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0038110198001348 of "Wet chemical etching of NiFe, NiFeCo AND NiMnSb for magnetic device fabrication", it looks like the possibilities include H2SO4 + HNO3, or HCl at 25 °C
According to Pace Technologies at www.metallographic.com/Etchants/Etchants.htm, and several other sites, Marble's Reagent can be used. Good luck.
