Discoloration of Nickel Based Wire Due to Electrolytic Cleaning
2002
We are using two electrolytic cleaners in our wire drawing plant. We have found that some grades of nickel based alloys develop a dark discoloration and even black spots during electrolytic cleaning.
Can anyone explain why?

Hi,
What is the Alloying metal? I have cleaned 51/49 Fe/Ni wire in a Electrolytic Degreaser composed of Potassium Hydroxide and Potassium Carbonate without Any problem. Cathodic followed by Anodic for a short duration will solve the purpose.
Good luck ...

Two things could be happening. One it could be staining, try running at lower temp limit as recommended by vendor. Two, you could be burning, try lower current.
