The use of zinc-rich powder coating as a base coat
Q. I'm interested in any data/opinions concerning the use and end results of zinc-rich powder coating. Will the use of this material eliminate the need for zinc phosphating? If so, is there any available independent test data available?
Thanks

A. Zinc rich powders may be effective in the protection of the substrate, but consideration must be made as to the adhesion of the zinc powder. Removing a chemical preteatment system may require the addition of a mechanical one to ensure effective adhesion. Zinc rich powders will also increase the wear & tear of gun parts due to the metal content.
As with any finish, the environment the goods are going into must be considered before any form of pretreatment, as too the maintenance program for the finish.
Zinc powder coat will offer no protection to the inside of tubes, hollows, and other areas of fabricated goods.

Q. Is the zinc powder coats can become a top coat for already galvanize steel?

A. Hi Michael.
Please spend a few sentences expounding on your idea because it is so easy to misunderstand a snippet of a question that we may mislead you. There is probably no reason that you could not apply a zinc-rich owder coating to a galvanized surface if you wished to -- but you need to do proper pretreatment of the galvanized surface (probably phosphatizing).

Q. To follow up on the zinc rich powder. Is this for high strength steels?

A. Hi Armando. Yes, zinc rich powder coating can be used on high strength steels. But, sorry, as I mentioned to Michael, we might mislead you if you offer a vague and abstract question rather than carefully describing your situation :-(
