Oiled Bronze Finish on Copper
Q. What simple process is there to turn copper sheeting into an oiled bronze finish?
Leland Schwab- Sequim, Washington
A. Hi, Leland. Ideally it should be sent to a plating shop for plating with copper, followed by blackening, followed by selective relieving for the most authentic solution to the problem. The blackening may be left bare as a "living finish", or be clearcoated for stability.
But it may be possible to apply a brown patina with liver of sulfur ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] or a brass darkening solution ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] yourself and clearcoat it. More detail and additional details can be found on letter 34482.
If the sheet will see no wear, it may be possible to flame color it to the look you want. Please see letter 2662 for more info about flame coloring.
Good luck.
