PP compatibility with sulfuric acid
Is Polypropylene compatible with 98 % sulfuric acid?
K.G.Vijaya Kumar- Surat, Gujarat, India
Hi Vijaya!
Is PP OK for 98 percent sulfuric? ... HELLS BELLS, NO!
Mild steel or stainless should be fine ... as long as it stays @ 98% but certainly not if the ambient 'air' can get at it as the acid absorbs moisture, which sulfuric greedily does, and reduces the concentration which then will attack most metals.
Even the world's best PVC, the red Trovidur, might have a problem. Ordinary uPVC is good for commercial 93 percent AT ROOM TEMPERATURE!
You might consider the fluorcarbons ... maybe PVDF is OK, surely FEP teflon or Halar would be OK.
What in the heck are you using it for?

YOU CAN USE UHMWPE (ULTRA HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHYLENE).
