Edge Building of Nickel Deposit Problem

We do Electroplating of Bright Nickel on Hardened steel axles of size 1mm dia. and length of 20 mm. We have a problem of edge building. i.e. To obtain five micron in the center of the axle we get 12-14 Micron thickness at the edges. Our requirement is 5-9 micron for the whole axle. We supply 30 amps for 105 minutes for 10000 Nos of components in a barrel.

Please let us know the root cause and the probable solution.

Guesses-- your barrel does not have big enough holes in it to get the proper solution flow, barrel rotation speed is too slow(possibly too fast). Using less amperage and plating longer will normally reduce the end effect. Better solution flow might actually reduce the plating time at a reduced amperage. Your barrel might be overloaded to the point where solution does not get to the center sections. Lastly, check with your plating chemical vendor for there professional opinion. If you are using your own home brew, there is no help there.

Please choose Electroless Nickel plating as an option as such tolerances cannot be achieved in Electroplated Barrel Nickel on steel parts.
