Training Standards for electroplating

Q. Hi,

We have set ourselves the difficult task of training mostly illiterate floor workers on safety, environment, cleaner production and VERY basic understanding of electroplating. Our new regulations requires a outcome-based standard to be set and we are hoping we do not have to start from scratch. The new learning method is adopted from English and Australian standards and I am looking for where I could start looking. Any help would be appreciated!

Best regards

A. Two major sources of electroplating training that I know in the U.S. are the AESF and Kushner Electroplating School. If I were you, I would try contacting people from these organizations and see if they have any suggestions for you.

thumbs up signHi Carrie,

Of course you can have it...email me at and I'll send it to you.

!! This is for George Brackett III too!

We are a trading company of Fasteners items. Like Carrie, I give training in all topics related to fasteners/bolt/nuts to our staff, e,g., material; mechanical properties; heat treatment etc. Exposure in plating process is one very interesting subject which I wanted to give a trial for quite sometime. Would it be possible to obtain one from you ?

Thanks.

A. Hi Jim. The MFSA (www.nasf.org) has a booklet called "Safety Tips for Operators of Metal Finishing Equipment" (I wrote it). It references a number of other documents on safety in finishing shops.

The Canning Handbook has a nice chapter on Safety.

Good luck.

A. In November 1998 the British Metal Finishing Association (MFA) published a Code of Practice for "The safe use of chromium compounds in electrolytic plating processes". This was done in conjunction with the Loss Prevention Council (LPC) and a major supplier of hexavalent chromium chemicals. As far as I am aware, the CoP has the full support of the Health and safety Executive (HSE) and encompasses all the relevant EU legislation on the subject. I believe the CoP is free of charge, as the MFA consider it to be essential that the industry protects itself, it employees, the general public and the environment from the effects of hexavalent chromium compounds. I suggest you contact the

? Does A-Z include automatic electroplating machines, and other mechanical devices, like polishing wheels? Or do you mean A-Z for the chemical hazards?

Q. I am a post graduate student in Business management with a back ground in Mechanical Engineering. I have been made the Director of my family owned Industry. I am interested in knowing more about companies or institutes offering a course or a training programme in metal finishing. I will look forward for your reply.

Yours sincerely,

A. Hi Surya.

In this area, NASF and Kushner Plating School run metal finishing courses regularly. ASM International is another possibility. In England, you could contact the Institute of Metal Finishing.

For certain selective processes, suppliers and specialists offer training programs. For example, Metal Coating Process Corporation conducts training in electropolishing, and a few suppliers offer training in Electroless Nickel Plating.

Some Consultants also offer individualized training programs.

Good luck.

A. Prathamesh,
Metal Finishing Association of India established in 1973 and a premier organisation affiliated with IUSF(International Union for Surface Finishing) conducts Certificate course in electroplating and Metal Finishing every Year during April. This course has been recognised by who is who in Metal Finishing Industry in India. Incidentally I happened to be a member in the governing council of this prestigious organisation for the last 6 years. In fact the person who heads this certificate course Dr. Ashish Kulkarni lives in Nasik, your native.
Prathamesh, please try to be in Mumbai during 2-4 Feb 2006 for ISF 2006 where you can get plenty of knowledge in this promising field
Good luck.

A. I'm not sure if the AESF is in India or not but I do know that they offer a great beginners course for electroplating. We use this in our shop for all of our new platers. I believe the cost is something like $150.00 (U.S.). You could check it out at www.nasf.com

Skill gate plating refresher CDs?

Q. We have some old Cd's from the windows 3.1 days and are looking for some current refresher cd's on plating applications for our operators to use as refresher -> skill gates.
The old company was DDi and their cd's were very well structured (now not in business) - do you have any suggestions/experience with electronic skill gate training that has worked well?

A. Hi, Michael.

The phrase "skill gate" is unfamiliar to me except as a brand name, so I may be missing something about your requirements. But both Kushner Electroplating School and the National Association for Surface Finishing (nasf.org) have scheduled training, in-house training, distance learning modules, etc. The NASF has frequent webinars that may meet your needs.
