Grinding, finishing in the face grooves on stellite # 3 rings.



 

My company is developing seats made out of Stellite # 3. These rings are produced by centrifugal casting process. There is face groove of 1/8" wide and 3/32" depth. The finish required is 8 RMS. We are not getting the required finish. Looking for the right tooling and finishing process.

Wow! 8 RMS on seats? These must be very very seats. Now, you mentioned the depth and length of groove, but you did not say anything about the rest of the part. This must be a pretty good size part, or is it an assembly part? Probably, as a quick incomplete answer, the best way to achieve the 8 RMS would be to use a buffing wheel system.

Amar:

Only reliable method to achieve 8 microinch or even better finish on hard metals is by means of a lapping machine that has a rotational table (usually made of gray iron) and satellital spindles also rotatory that hold and press the seals against the table. The rest of the work is achieved by wet alumina of the suitable mesh size.
