Replacement for teflon/moly coating
First I'd like to say that I'm extremely pleased I've found this website there seems to be an amazing amount of knowledge here.
I am a gunsmith who specializes in refinishing firearms. I currently use a solvent based teflon/moly coating for my refinishing needs. The teflon/moly exceeds my corrosion resistance needs but falls short on abrasion and wear resistance. I'm researching ceramic coatings but I believe they are going to be too costly and not thin enough, I need approximately .0005-.0010 so I can also apply the coating to the internals without having fitting problems. Are all teflon/moly type coatings around the same hardness? I'd need at a minimum to be able to obtain the coating in a satin or flat black. I've heard about a teflon/epoxy powdercoat but can't seem to find any distributors or any info on whether it would meet my needs.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Brian, have you had any luck researching ceramic coatings for your firearms? I am thinking I might want to get my hunting rifle done in a flat black, but I am not very well versed on the subject.

Brian, some firearms manufacturers are increasingly pleased with 'electrophoretic lacquer' finishes. This is an electrolytically applied organic finish that is in the thickness range you are looking for, while being attractive and quite abrasion resistant. The cost of a system is not pocket change but is perhaps not out of the range of a good-sized refinisher.
Jim, there are a great number of high technology finishes that can be applied in factories, including PVD ceramic coatings, but which are not something which a consumer or a small gunsmith can brush on themself unfortunately. Sometimes the older established finishes, although they require maintenance, may be more fun and more practical for small users.
