Passivation Standards

Can you please tell me what are the passivation standards used on stainless steel product? As Accounts Manager, I have been asked by a prospective client to what specification can we passivate stainless? Our chemical technologist suggested I contact you.

Typical standards are

Def Stan 03-2 see www.dstan.mod.uk and click defence standards to get a free copy

QQ-P-35C [from DLA] can be found at astimage.daps.dla.mil/online/new/ you may have to register but you can get a free copy.

ASTM A967 you can get from www.astm.org but you have to pay.

All of these standards tell you how to do the job not just the required properties of the finish.

The one you pick is up to you but the ASTM is probably the one that will be best as it is non-military and likely to be around the longest as military standards seem to be going out of fashion.

Gary:

QQ-P-35 has been cancelled in favor of ASTM A967, unless your are doing aerospace parts. Then you should use AMSQQP35 [canceled] or AMS2700. These are the standards that you should use for U.S. and Canada.
