Black anodized restoration on old aluminum steering wheel

I have a sort of old Steering wheel that I like very much and I am trying to restore it. The aluminum tubes of the wheel used to be black when new. This color is gone and I have tried paint but will not last and makes it look very bad.

Is there a way to return the glossy black color to the aluminum with out damaging the leather on the unit?

Thanks in advance.

Isn't there any possibility to remove the leather? If it does, it will be no problem to anodize it black again.
