Test specifications, ASTM, MIL, AMS, etc.

I would like to know if there are any standard specifications used in the plating industry on 1) paint adhesion test on zinc or cadmium surfaces using tape or something, 2) corrosion test using X-scribe on coupons. If so, could you please tell us the numbers.

Get hold of a copy of Metal Finishing Magazine's organic finishing guidebook and directory issue. Elsevier Science, Inc. It comes with a subscription to Metal Finishing. Ask for their introductory rate.

Military specifications for plating, such as AMSQQP416 (cadmium) detail how adhesion testing is to be performed. For instance, plate a test coupon, subject it to chromate treatment, if required, prime and paint using your normal paint system. Then, scribe three parallel lines 1/4" apart, then 3 more lines perpendicular to the first lines. Apply 3-M brand #250 masking tape across the lines. Rub the tape to make sure no bubbles, etc.

Quickly pull the tape off and examine at the junction of the crosses. This will show how well both the paint and the cadmium adhered. Additionally, you can perform a bend test for adhesion where the test coupon is bent over a mandrel until the coupon fractures. You then try to lift the plating at the fractured area. If it doesn't lift, you've got good adhesion. You can also do a bake test. I believe the spec tells you what time and temperature to bake, then observe the coupon for blisters.

I worked for a power equipment manufacturer that used a similar test as mentioned in the QQ-P-416 above except that we used a tool that held 11 exacto type blades. We made both horizontal and vertical cuts that gave a grid of 100 squares. Using some type of tape, we would rub the tape and quickly pull the tape off and examine how many square came off. There was a standard that dictated the requirement. Does anyone know if this is an industry test and what the test spec is?

I'm looking for some mil specs on vapor corrosion inhibitors. They are Fed. Test Method 101C sub-method 3004, and 4031. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The specification regarding Adhesion testing is BSS 7225. You may also want to check out MIL-STD-151 testing on metals and ASTM B117.
