SS surface preparation problem

I intend to apply epoxy coat by brush to existing steel structure. Please suggest ways/means of surface preparation. I may go in for acid etching using ( HNO3 + H2So4).

Thanks & regards,

I am making the assumption that you have a stainless steel structure. (304 or 316). Since you mentioned acid treatments. The two acids that you mentioned may not do what you want.

(1) Degrease the surface ( Caustic Solutions or Organic Solvents)
(2) Etch away oxides ( Nitric Acid/ Ammonium Bifluoride)
(3) Rinse with water and dry.

Note: Look for paints that contain Zn or Sn as sacrificial element for corrosion purposes.
