Manufacturing Process of Nickel Sulphate and Nickel Chloride

Current question and answers:

wikipedia
Nickel sulfate

Q. I am trying to manufacture Nickel Sulphate Hexahydrate for electroplating industry.

The process is by reacting Nickel metal with sulfuric acid and cooling to crystallize Nickel sulphate.

I am able to achieve crystals but the Ni content is coming at 20.7 % but the results should be at least 22% for Nickel Sulphate Hexahydrate. What I think is, the crystals that are formed are Nickel Sulphate Heptahydrate NiSO4.7H2O hence Ni content at 20.5 to 20.7 %.

I need help on how to attain Hexahydrate crystal NiSO4.6H2O so the purity comes at 22%

I would really appreciate the help.

Thank you.

A. Hi Sameer. I know nothing about this subject except to avoid any suggestions that involve nickel carbonyl. But the abstract of 'Thermogravimetric analysis of hexa- and heptahydrate crystals and packed powder of nickel sulphate' by P.N.Nandi, D.A.Deshpande & V.G.Kher says: "It was observed that crystals grown at 12.5 °C show the presence of seven molecules of water of crystallization irrespective of whether the starting material is hexa or hepta, whereas crystals grown at 40 °C behave as hexahydrate irrespective of the starting material."

It sounds worthwhile for you to get that article; some other promising articles can be seen at scholar.google.com as well.

We cannot print any direct answers, only those which reference patents and published articles because the posters are anonymous to a good degree and we must be careful to avoid possible crowd sourcing of trade secrets.
