Field finishing a new bronze door

Incralac
(brass lacquer with benzotriazole)
incralac
on eBay or

Amazon

(affil links)

Q. What should I use to 'finish' a brand new bronze (CDA 385) door/entry set? I've been told to clean it first with Brass-o, then apply 3 coats of Incralac this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] . Suggestions?

A. Dear Thomas,

Since the doors are brand new, did the manufacturer already apply a clear coat? Check with them and see, if so, you should be okay for awhile. If not, Brasso this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] or another polishing compound would work fine, but before applying the clear coating, you need to chemically clean (acetone this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] Warning! highly Flammable! ) the door and remove all traces of the polishing compound. I think Incralac this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] is an acrylic lacquer, this would not last too well on areas that will be handled, such as doorknobs or pulls. A nitrocellulose lacquer sprayed as a base coat and then top coated with the acrylic lacquer would give you the best durability there.

Good luck,
