Topcoat to prevent tin on steel from corroding

1996

Q. I have a customer who needs corrosion protection (but not paint) for electroplated tin on steel. What type products are on the market that would fit into an aqueous cleaning system?

Thanks,

Phil Ruggiero

A. You may want to specify another coating if your tin requires corrosion protection. What is the application?

A. Hi, Phil. There is a series of post-treat product from Technic called Tarniban. They are useful for a number of metals and I think that tin is one of them, but please talk to Technic about it.

But what is the tin for? For example, tin is a common food-safe plating, but if this is a food-contact application you can't just go in and add a topcoat that may be unsuitable for food service.

I think I agree with Tom, though, that if the tin plating corrodes, some other plating like electroless nickel might be better. If you can tell us more about the application, and what environment seems to be causing the corrosion, we can hopefully offer a more targeted answer. Best of luck.
