Rutledge Avenue
Nov 24, 2003
Hi!,
I was in Mrs. Magraff's class for kindergarten at Our Lady of all Soul's, I'm not sure of the year it was either 65, or 66. My maiden name was Oliver. My parents are Melvin and Mary Oliver, we lived at 223 Rutledge Ave,(Our House was on the corner) until around 1971. Some of my neighbors were the Johnsons,Denise and Tracy, and the Heisers, Maureen and Jimmy, and The Zinks across the street, and the Reids. I returned to East Orange about a year and a half ago, and was sad to see our house was in the worst condition of any in the area.( My dad always kept it in great shape, fresh paint etc.)Please contact me if you know my area or any information you'd like to send on the area

OMG, Jeannie! You are not going to believe this. Over the weekend, I was helping my sister Peggy move. There was a beautiful desk that we put in her bedroom. As we were polishing it, she told me who gave it to her. It was your dad. After your mom died, Peggy tried to help by cleaning your house for him etc. Your mom and dad were the nicest people. I remember your mom coming over to me as I was sitting alone on my front steps, being the only kid on the block not invited to a birthday party. I remember your sister Debbie told us she used to sit in the bathtub with her jeans on so they would shrink to fit her. We lived 2 houses down from the Zinks and Mary Mooney and I used to babysit for them and used to play dolls with Cindy Johnson. Yes, it is sad to see the dream place of our parents gone in such a bad way. Some people just don't how fortunate they are and don't take care of things they way they should be. It was great to see you on here, hope to see you again on here. My best to you and you r family.

Dear Jeannie, So good to hear from you. Tell us how life has been for you as well as your memories of EO. I remember your Mom and Dad. I dated Richard "Dickey" Johnson while he and Lee worked for your Dad. Dick bought his first car from your dad "Tex" for $100.00. A blue 1957 Ford. We worked on that thing all one summer because it had well over 100,000 miles on it. My Dad was a great mechanic and he would come over and help us pull the transmission etc. Dick and I married and had two children. When Dawn was born in "68 you, Tracy and Denise were still very young. Although I am now divorced from Richard we remain close to each other through our children and grandchild. I stay in touch with all of the Johnson's and will let them know you have posted here. By the way, Michael Zink just posted a message on classmates CJScott message board. He is now divorced, living in Glen Ridge and has custody of 4 children. The youngest being in 3rd grade. Hope you have a blessed and happy Christmas Mary aka Melba

Marian,
it was so good to hear from you!. I don't remember you in particular, but I do remember your sister that had the pretty red hair-was that Peggy? My Dad lives in Texas now, as does my Brother and is remarried. My sister Patty and I live in Georgia,( I sure do miss those E.O snows!), My stepsister Debbie lives in California. My brother hasn't been back up there since we moved, and wants to go back.We keep saying were all going to get together, and make a trip back someday. If any of you would like contact information on any of my family just let me know.( I was such a little devil growing up, I fear a lot of my old friends may be leary of contacting me:)
Dear Mary,
It was good to hear from you! I had forgotten my Dad's old nickname
"Tex".I remember that old car, in fact I just saw it in an old picture the other day. I would love to talk to Denise and Tracy, we were best friends do you have any contact information on them? Let me catch everyone up, that's interested. I'm married, have 4 children 2 boys, Matthew 21, and Phillip 16, and two step-daughters, Angie 24, and Courtney 22.We live about 30 miles west of Atlanta, Ga., in Villa Rica. I am a substitute teacher for several of the surounding counties in our area. Lets see memories of East Orange there are so many....For starters I remember Denise Johnson and I swimming in their kiddie pool in the backyard and losing a tooth in it. Playing dress up with her mom's high heels and clothes.I remember my brother always building go-karts(Wheels courtesy of Pathmark!) I was quite the tomboy!, and riding them full speed down Grant Ave.,and surviving! I remember my brother and his cronies daring me to cut through the cemetary one night. I remember waiting with anticipation for the snow plow to pass, so we could go play on the "mountains" they left behind. The kick-ball games in the street on our corner, with (what seemed like everyone in the neighborhood playing), and the lady that lived across from us keeping our ball every time it landed in her yard! The candy store across from Columbian Elementary School, with the old man and his wife. The mean crossing guard there with the red hair I think her name was Mary.I remember The fair at Columbian Elementary falling on the same day as my confirmation, Oh the agony! Going to Caravells for dipped cones. What else...Shopping at Two Guys and Korvettes for school clothes, shopping with my mom at the
5&10 store downtown, and starting a kids bank account in the huge
( Or so it seemed) bank down in the same area. I remember trick or treating one year(remember how late we stayed out?)and at the end of the night a boy ran by and stole my bag. I went home in tears and my mom made my brother go back out with me for a little while. That was when the neighborhood was starting to go down hill.Well that's all for now, It was nice to remanisce.
