Anti-galling Testing
Q. I am trying to determine the best way to validate (test) the effectiveness of anti-galling (black oxide) of the threads on a coupling made of steel. The test is to satisfy a requirement for API Spec 11b. This specification does not clearly describe the type of testing required. It simply says the product has to meet the manufacturers requirements. While this sounds simple, creating the justification to satisfy 7.5.2 of ISO 9001/ISO 29001 (dealing with special processes) is where the need for a basis for this testing is needed.

A. ASTM G98-17 [affil. link] is a standard test for galling, describing a button-on-block test using a modified hardness tester to provide a constant load. But you can use other instruments- we use a low load tensile tester, and it seems to work well.
