Painting a hippie van

I am painting my 93" Ford Aerostar into a hippie van that I am going to be using to transport animals for my animal rescue. It was spray painted a bright blue and had decals on it that I have removed, but I have tried Goo Gone to try to remove the adhesive, but it's not strong enough; what would you recommend to take off adhesive currently on the van from decals removed without removing the paint? painted graphics. I will be hand painting, not airbrushing, and was wondering which type of paint to use. I already gave it a try using my acrylic paint but 1st rain destroyed it. Wanted some advice on what type of paint to use that won't get ruined after all my efforts into the graphics.

Pictures of van enclosed. Last picture shows what I painted which is now ruined. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
