Are copper sulphate crystals dead or alive?

Q. Why are copper sulphate this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] crystals thought not to be alive?

A. Brooke, turn the question on its head - what things do living species do? They grow, reproduce and react or adapt to their environment. Does copper sulphate do any of these things? If it does, it is alive, if it doesn't it is not living. To say something is dead is to suggest it once lived and this is not always the case, so you have to be careful how you phrase things! I am sure you can now answer your own question!
