Painting clearcoat on chrome for protection?
2007
I just bought a vehicle with a "new" set of chrome rims, but they were left on during the winter and they have rust spots on them. I can manage to clean the rust off and retrieve the original finish, but a week later they are rusty looking again!
I was wondering if there is a way to paint them with a certain type clearcoat after cleaning to protect them from rusting and keep the shiny chrome finish... any help?

Only first class chromium plating (layer of copper, layer of nickel, layer of chromium) can offer some corrosion protection. Clearcoat can help you -- try Everbrite [a finishing.com supporting advertiser] coating. Hope it helps and good luck!

I hate to damn something from a low-rez photo, but this doesn't look like very good plating, Tim. Once the plating is perforated and starts rusting, the protection is gone. Wax or a clear coat might help marginally, but they need replating.
